Our approach to winemakeing is with respect. We use natural, sustainable methods of cover cropping to replace nitrogen in the soil, and return all our composted grape seeds, skins and stems to the vineyard for additional nutrition.

Our old Zinfandel vineyard is head pruned and dry farmed. This is an ancient Italian method of farming that does not supplement the vines with water or nutrients from irrigation. This stressful and labor-intensive method of vineyard management produces grapes of great varietal intensity and flavor. We often walk the vineyard in the extreme heat of the Dry Creek summer and proclaim to them, "You are great and mighty vines! Water is for wimps!!"

Let's all do our part to conserve water! Click to learn more.

2008 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
Our first Pinot is a medium bodied fruit driven wine that we felt would benefit from the addition of a small amount of Petite Syrah and a year on 25% new French oak. It is both direct and pleasing on the pallet with notes of plum, cherry and vanilla, and a slightly sweet caramel finish. We have savored this fruity, luscious wine with all kinds of food. Try pan seared duck breast brushed with Virginia’s famous Zinfandel sauce for starters? Especially memorable was a ham, asparagus and Gruyere crepe with a good twist of black pepper.

2008 Petite Syrah Dry Creek Valley
Deep, dark, rich and young is the only way we can begin to describe this wine. Silky also comes to mind, with a hint of blackberry. This is surely a candidate for further aging for two to five years at least, yet we are drinking it now with hearty roasts and smoky barbecue. The fruit is grown on Wolcott Ranch, in the center of Dry Creeks famous bench. This wine will go the distance and will not disappoint!

2006 Yoakim Bridge Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
2006 was a cooler growing season than normal, more like the Russian River Valley than our heat drenched Dry Creek Valley. The vines budded late and we had more rain than usual, which increased our concern about powdery mildew, which is an enemy of grapes. We had to sulphur the crops every ten days for nine weeks! One long prolonged heat wave in July threatened our outlook for premium fruit. Fall rains loomed ominously around the first of October-we frantically picked October 2 and beat the rains by three days! Score one for us! Dry farmed fruit such as ours cannot handle rain as well as cordoned fruit trained on wires, so we try to avoid bunch rot at all cost. As a comparison to this year, 2008,we picked September 1, Labor Day. This is a beautiful dark- fruited complex wine with a silky texture and a long finish highlighted by a hint of sweet oak. We added about 8% Cabernet Sauvignon for longevity and color. You can enjoy this wine now with your favorite pastas, chops, roast chicken and beef. Drink now or over the next two to five years.

2007 Yoakim Bridge Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
This is the release of an exceptionally balanced, full-bodied beauty that is loaded with layers of peppery spice. Raspberry overtones underscore the sweet vanilla finish, thanks to David's choice of French oak barrels to enhance the incredible fruit, from our old, dry farmed vineyard. 8% Cabernet Sauvignon from Dry Creek Valley was added to insure cellaring time of 3-5 years, at least! Should you decide to enjoy it now, please decant and brace yourselves: THIS is what Zinfandel is all about!

Dry Creek Valley Cuvee
Dry Creek Valley Cuvee with the majority of fruit being 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Van Ayela ranch on the valley floor. It is blended with some 2004 Petite Syrah, Syrah and Merlot for a little balance and color. This is a lighter, less complex wine than our Bordeaux style cuvees of 2000 and 2003. It is spicy with gracious scents of cherry and light French oak. You will find this to be a GREAT picnic wine as the alcohol is a modest 13.5%, low by today's standards.

2007 Dry Creek Valley Cuvee
This luscious, spicy blend is sourced from 100% Dry Creek Valley fruit. It consists of: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petite Syrah. Exotic far-Eastern spices dance across the pallet. David tastes overtures of cinnamon and cloves, and I add to that blackberries and ripe fig. To pair, let your imagination take flight and expect this gorgeous wine pick up the tab! Bon Voyage!

2006 Yoakim Bridge Dry Creek Valley Merlot
Gallaway Vineyard
This lovely noble grape varietal is the perfect counterpoint to the other two wines in the Club selection. 2006 was the last "normal" year in terms of rainfall to date, 59 inches! The fruit from this maturing vineyard is dark and the weight enormous, with some tannins that are yet to be tamed. It is much deeper, and more powerful than the 2005 Merlot from the same vineyard, and frankly, drinks more like a Cabernet Sauvignon. We would suggest "chaining" it to your cellar for three or more years, should you have the patience. Decant it for a good half an hour to allow time for you to catch your breath, as its beauty is stunning.

Yoakim Bridge 2005 Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Stromberg Vineyard
We have been blending the grapes from this western bench vineyard into our Zinfandel for quite a few years, being pleased with the structure and complexity that it imparts to our fruit forward estate wine. In 2004, we made our first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stromberg vineyard, sent a bottle to our Gold Vine Club as a part of their October selection, and watched it sell out before ever being offered to the public!

Now that the 2006 Cabernet is safely aging in the barrels, we have decided to release the 2005 it to the public. Watching tasters react to this amazing wine is a delight. Everyone remarks about this young wines' tremendous fruit which is already asserting itself as a classic Cabernet. The tannins are long and silky, giving the perfect foundation to the overtures of chocolate, vanilla, clove and a sprinkle of white pepper. Cellar aging will encourage the earthier flavors of smoke, aged leather and old roses to emerge, a combination well worth waiting for! David waited ten years to make his first Cabernet, giving the verital the respect it deserves. The grapes and barrels used were expensive, the production small and the results? A treasure!

It is an excellent complement to any grilled fare, especially ribs, chicken, salmon and game. Also try it on meatballs for a simple and delicious appetizer (that many of you may have sampled on your last visit!) It contains a trace of chocolate for it’s lingering finish. Sold only through the winery, it makes a lovely gift for friends, family and business associates.
